Convert PDF to Word
Turn a PDF's text into an editable Word document.
Or drop one anywhere on this page
What to know about PDF to Word
A PDF is a picture of a finished document: the words are there, but pinned to coordinates rather than arranged in paragraphs anyone can edit. This rebuilds them into a Word document you can type into — real text, real paragraphs, headings recovered from the type sizes the original used. It runs entirely in your browser, which matters because the documents people most want to edit are usually the ones they least want to upload.
How to convert a PDF to Word
- 1
Open the PDF
Choose your file or drop it here. It is read on your device, and no copy is sent anywhere.
- 2
Let the text be rebuilt
Lines, paragraphs and headings are reconstructed from the positions and type sizes in the original.
- 3
Download the document
Save the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
What PDF to Word accepts and produces
- Input
- One PDF of flowing prose, or a scan if you turn recognition on.
- Output
- A .docx file with the document's paragraphs, headings and basic structure as editable text.
- Limits
- This recovers text and structure, not layout. A heavily designed page — multi-column, floating figures, precise spacing — will not come back looking identical, and images are not carried across.
- Offline
- Yes, once the rendering engine has been fetched on your first visit.
Why PDF to Word here
- Produces real editable text, not pictures of pages
- Headings recovered from the original type sizes, so the navigation pane works
- Opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages
- Your document never leaves the browser
Where your file goes
Nowhere. This tool runs inside your browser, and the page is served with a policy that forbids it from sending your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and process a file.
Questions
Is the Word file really editable, or just pictures of the pages?
Really editable. Every paragraph in the output is a Word paragraph containing real text you can select, retype, spellcheck and reflow. Many free converters render each page to an image and drop it into a .docx — the file opens, and nothing in it can be changed. That is not what this does.
Will the layout look exactly like the PDF?
No, and no honest local converter can promise that. A PDF stores glyphs at coordinates with no record of which ones formed a column, a text box or a caption, so the output is the document's text in reading order with headings and paragraphs reconstructed. Expect the words to be right and the visual design to be simplified.
Are images from the PDF included?
Not currently. The conversion rebuilds the text layer, so photographs, logos and diagrams are left behind. If you need the pictures, PDF to JPG or PDF to PNG will give you the pages as images alongside the Word file.
How are headings decided?
By size. A PDF does not mark a line as a heading, so lines set noticeably larger than the body text become headings, and distinct larger sizes become different heading levels. It is a good guess rather than a recovered fact, and an unusual document may need tidying.
What happens with tables?
Table text comes through in reading order as paragraphs rather than as a Word table, because the columns are inferred rather than declared. If your document is mainly tabular, PDF to Excel is the better tool — it turns detected columns into real spreadsheet cells.
What happens if I convert a scanned PDF?
You are told it has no text, and no file is produced. A scan is a photograph of a page: there is nothing inside it to rebuild into paragraphs. Reading the writing would need OCR, which this tool does not do, and inventing an empty Word document would waste your time.
Do multi-page and rotated PDFs work?
Yes. Every page is read in turn, and rotation is applied before the text is read, so a sideways page comes out in the order a person reads it rather than the order it happens to be stored.
Will custom or embedded fonts come out garbled?
No. Text is read through the same engine the rest of the site uses, configured so embedded and subset fonts resolve to the right characters — the fix that stopped garbled output when the image tools were built.
Is my PDF uploaded to convert it?
It is not. Reading the file and writing the Word document both happen inside this tab, and the document is discarded when you close it. Open your network panel and watch, or disconnect entirely — the conversion still runs.
