Convert PDF to Excel
Turn tables in a PDF into real spreadsheet cells.
Or drop one anywhere on this page
What to know about PDF to Excel
A table in a PDF looks like a table and behaves like a picture of one: the figures are drawn at coordinates, with nothing marking where a column starts or a row ends. This finds the columns by looking for the repeating left edges a table produces, and writes the result as a real spreadsheet — text in text cells, numbers in numeric cells you can actually add up. When a document has no table in it, you are told so rather than handed a sheet of nonsense.
How to convert a PDF to Excel
- 1
Open the PDF
Choose the file or drop it here. It is read on your device, with nothing sent anywhere.
- 2
Tables are found by their columns
Repeating column positions across several rows are what identify a table, so ordinary prose is not forced into cells.
- 3
Download the workbook
Save the .xlsx and open it in Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc.
What PDF to Excel accepts and produces
- Input
- One PDF containing tabular data, or a scan if you turn recognition on.
- Output
- An .xlsx file with the detected tables as real spreadsheet cells.
- Limits
- Tables are detected from where the text sits, since a PDF does not record that something is a table. Ruled grids with clear columns work well; merged cells and nested headers are approximated.
- Offline
- Yes, once the rendering engine has been fetched on your first visit.
Why PDF to Excel here
- Numbers are written as numbers, so columns can be summed
- One worksheet per page that genuinely contains a table
- Tells you honestly when a PDF has no table to extract
- Everything happens on your device
Where your file goes
Nowhere. This tool runs inside your browser, and the page is served with a policy that forbids it from sending your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and process a file.
Questions
Do I get real cells, or just text in a spreadsheet-shaped file?
Real cells. Each value goes into its own cell, and anything that reads as a number is stored as a number rather than as text that looks like one — which is the difference between a column you can sum and a column you cannot.
How does it know where the table is?
By its columns. A table draws its cells at repeating left edges, so a handful of positions each shared by several rows is strong evidence of one. Prose has no such regularity and produces a single column, which is correctly read as a sign that this is not a table.
What if my PDF has no tables?
You are told, and no file is produced. Turning a page of paragraphs into rows and columns would give you a spreadsheet full of fragments; refusing is more useful. The message points you at PDF to Word instead.
Can it handle several tables in one document?
Yes. Each page that contains a table becomes its own worksheet, named for the page it came from, so a report with a table on pages three and seven produces two sheets.
Will merged cells and multi-line rows survive?
Not reliably. Column detection works from left edges, so a cell whose text wraps onto a second line, or one that spans several columns, may land in the wrong place. Check the result against the original before relying on the figures.
Does it work on a scanned table?
No. A scan holds no text, only a picture of one, so there is nothing to place into cells. It will tell you rather than producing an empty workbook.
Are formulas or formatting preserved?
Neither, and neither exists in the source. A PDF stores the result of a calculation, not the calculation, so what you get is the values. Colours, borders and fonts are not carried across.
Which programs open the result?
Any spreadsheet application — Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc. The file is a standard .xlsx workbook.
Do the figures in my table leave my device?
They do not. Finding the tables and writing the workbook both happen inside this tab, which matters more here than almost anywhere else on the site — tabular PDFs are usually invoices, payroll and bank statements. Nothing carrying the document goes out, and it works with the network switched off entirely.
