Add a header and footer to a PDF
Put a title, date or page count along the top and bottom of every page.
Or drop one anywhere on this page
What to know about Add Header & Footer
Put text along the top and bottom of every page — six slots in all, three at each edge, so a document title, a date and a page count can sit side by side without fighting for the same corner. Use {page} and {pages} and they are filled in per page. Nothing is uploaded.
A running header is one of those things that is trivial in a word processor and oddly hard once a document has become a PDF. The page is finished — its text is placed at fixed coordinates, and there is no reflow, no margin box and no concept of a header region to drop text into. Anything added has to be drawn on top, in a space the document has hopefully left empty.
That is what this does, and knowing it explains the one setting people wonder about. The margin control is not decoration: it is the distance in from the page edge at which the text is drawn, and because nothing on the page moves out of the way, it is the whole of your control over whether the header lands in white space or across the top line of a paragraph. Documents produced from a word processor almost always have room. Documents produced from a scan, or trimmed to their content, sometimes do not.
Six slots rather than one is the other deliberate decision. Real documents put different things in different places — a matter number top-left and a page count top-right, a confidentiality notice bottom-centre — and a tool with a single text box forces those to be done as three separate passes over the file, each one re-saving the document. Here they are one operation.
{page} and {pages} are filled in as the stamping happens, because their value is different on every page. Anything whose value is constant across the document — a date, a title, a reference — is put into the text before stamping begins, which is why there is a button that inserts today's date rather than a token that means it. The practical difference is that the date is fixed at the moment you make the file, which is what a dated document should want; a token evaluated when the file is opened would silently change what the document says.
The limitation to know about before you start is the font. The standard PDF fonts encode WinAnsi — Latin script, accented characters, most European punctuation — and nothing else. Devanagari, CJK, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic and Hebrew are outside it. Drawing those needs a font embedded in the output file with the right glyphs and, for Indic script, correct shaping as well, and doing that badly produces text that is reordered or joined incorrectly rather than merely ugly. So this tool checks what you have typed and refuses characters it cannot draw, naming them, instead of accepting the job and writing a page of question marks.
Everything else about the document survives. The page tree is untouched, so bookmarks, links, annotations and form fields come through exactly as they were, and the text you add is real text rather than a picture of text.
How to add a header and footer to a PDF
- 1
Bring in the document
Choose the PDF or drop it anywhere on this page. It is opened where it already is, on your device.
- 2
Fill in the slots you want
Three positions along the top and three along the bottom. Leave any of them empty and nothing is drawn there.
- 3
Add the automatic fields
Type {page} for the page number and {pages} for the total. Both are worked out per page as the document is stamped.
- 4
Stamp and download
Every page from your chosen start point gets the text, and the finished file downloads straight to you.
What Add Header & Footer accepts and produces
- Input
- One PDF, and the text for any of the six slots.
- Output
- The same document with your text stamped along the top and bottom edge of each page.
- Limits
- Text is drawn in Helvetica, which covers Latin script and its accents. Devanagari, CJK, Cyrillic, Greek and Arabic cannot be drawn and are refused rather than replaced with question marks. Existing content is not moved out of the way — headers sit in the page margin, so a document with no margin will overlap.
- Offline
- Yes, entirely, after your first visit.
Why Add Header & Footer here
- Six independent slots, so a title and a page count do not compete for one corner
- {page} and {pages} are filled in per page automatically
- Text stays real text — selectable, searchable and copyable
- Start from any page, so a cover sheet can be left clean
- The rest of the document is untouched: links, bookmarks and form fields all survive
Where your file goes
Nowhere. This tool runs inside your browser, and the page is served with a policy that forbids it from sending your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and process a file.
Questions
What is the difference between this and a watermark?
Position and purpose. A watermark is a single string drawn large and diagonal across the middle of the page, to mark it as a draft or as confidential. A header sits in the margin along an edge, small and level, and there are six of them — it is the running furniture of a document rather than a stamp across its face. Watermark PDF is the right tool if what you want is DRAFT across the page.
Can I use it just for page numbers?
You can, by putting {page} in one slot. Add Page Numbers is the simpler page for that job, with formats like 'Page 3 of 12' ready made. Come here when the number needs to sit alongside other text on the same edge, which is the thing that page cannot do.
Which automatic fields are available?
{page} for the current page and {pages} for the total. Those are the two whose value changes from page to page, so they have to be worked out while the document is stamped. A date or a filename is the same on every page, so the tool inserts it into the text before stamping — there is a button for today's date rather than a token for it.
Why is my Hindi or Chinese text refused?
Because the standard PDF fonts encode a character set called WinAnsi, which covers Latin script and its accents and nothing else. Drawing Devanagari or CJK needs a font with those glyphs embedded in the file, which is a substantially larger piece of work than it sounds. What this tool will not do is accept the text and write question marks across every page, so it tells you which characters it cannot draw and stops.
Will the header overlap my existing content?
It can, if the document has no margin to spare. The text is placed a set distance in from the page edge and nothing on the page is moved to accommodate it, because reflowing a finished PDF is not something any tool can do reliably. Increase the margin setting to push the header further out, or check the preview before you commit.
Can I start the header after the cover page?
Yes. Set the first page to 2 and page one is left completely clean, which is what a title page or a cover sheet usually wants. Every page from there on is stamped.
Does the text stay selectable?
It does. The header is written as real text into the page's content stream, so it can be selected, copied and searched, and it stays crisp at any zoom. Nothing is rasterised and no page is rebuilt as an image.
Is my document uploaded to be stamped?
No. The PDF is opened, stamped and re-saved by a worker inside this tab. Open your browser's network panel while you run it and nothing carrying the document goes out; switch the network off entirely and it still works.
