Flatten a PDF form
Turn filled form fields into fixed page content.
Or drop one anywhere on this page
What to know about Flatten PDF
You have filled in a form and you are about to send it. The trouble is that it is still a form: the person receiving it sees boxes they can click into, some viewers render the answers differently from others, and a stray keystroke can change a figure. Flattening settles it. The values you entered become ordinary page content and the fields themselves are removed, so what arrives looks the same everywhere and offers nobody a cursor. It happens on your own device, and the file never leaves it.
How to flatten a PDF
- 1
Open the completed form
Choose the PDF or drop it here. Its interactive fields are counted on your device, with nothing sent anywhere.
- 2
Check what will change
You are told how many fields will become fixed text before anything runs.
- 3
Flatten and download
The values are drawn into the page, the fields are removed, and the finished file downloads to you.
What Flatten PDF accepts and produces
- Input
- One PDF form you have already filled in.
- Output
- The same document with the answers baked into the page and the editable fields removed.
- Limits
- This is deliberately one-way: once flattened the values cannot be edited again. Links and comments are kept; only form fields and their widgets are removed. It is not a security measure.
- Offline
- Yes, completely. Baking form values into a page needs no additional engine.
Why Flatten PDF here
- Filled values become page content, so every viewer shows them identically
- Interactive fields are genuinely removed — nothing left to click into
- Text, images, links, comments, bookmarks and metadata all preserved
- Tells you how many fields are involved before it does anything
Where your file goes
Nowhere. This tool runs inside your browser, and the page is served with a policy that forbids it from sending your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and process a file.
Questions
Does flattening make a PDF secure?
No, and this is the most important thing to understand about it. Flattening removes the form, not the ability to change the document. The values become ordinary page content, which anyone with a PDF editor can still edit, cover or delete. If you need to stop someone opening the file, use Protect PDF. If you need content to be genuinely unrecoverable, use Redact PDF, which rebuilds the page.
What is actually removed when I flatten?
The interactive form: the fields and the widgets that draw them. Everything else stays. Measured on a document carrying all of it, links, comments, bookmarks, named destinations, attachments, metadata, page order and page rotation come through unchanged — only the form widgets disappear.
Will my answers still be visible afterwards?
Yes, and in exactly the same place. The values are drawn into the page before the fields are removed, so a flattened form looks identical to the filled one. What changes is that they are now text on the page rather than the contents of a box.
Can I edit the form again after flattening?
Not as a form. The fields are gone, so there is nothing to fill and nothing to tab through. Keep your unflattened copy if you might need to change an answer — flattening is a one-way step and this tool does not reverse it.
What if my PDF has no form fields?
You are told so, and nothing runs. A document with no interactive fields is already fixed page content, and handing back an unchanged file described as flattened would be misleading. This tool only acts where there is a form to act on.
How is this different from filling a form?
Fill PDF Forms writes values into the fields and deliberately leaves the document fillable, so a recipient can correct a typo. Flattening is the opposite decision, taken afterwards: you have finished, and you want the answers fixed. The two are often used in sequence — fill, check, then flatten.
Does flattening reduce the file size?
Usually a little, since the field definitions and their appearance streams are no longer needed, but the change is small and it is not the reason to do this. Compress PDF is the tool for size.
Will flattening affect a digital signature?
Any change to a signed PDF invalidates its signature, which is how signatures work rather than a limit of this tool. Because flattening modifies the document, a signed file raises a warning before anything runs so you can decide.
Is my form uploaded to flatten it?
No. The document is read and rewritten inside your browser, and the values in it never travel anywhere. Open the network panel while you flatten and nothing carrying the file goes out; switch the network off entirely and it still works.
